The interweaving of many simultaneous narrative lines is a fundamental breakthrough in the history of literature and particularly in the development of the successful forms we call “romance” and “novel”. Without that innovation, we might never have had works like Les Misérables or War and Peace. It was in the texts of the Grail cycle—thus in 13th-century France—that this revolutionary technique was first adopted and then perfected. Later on, it was destined to influence authors such as Ariosto or Malory, and then to establish itself in the European narrative tradition. But how and why did this breakthrough originate? Thanks to a joint investigation on the fronts of literary analysis, philology and cultural history, the author advances an original hypothesis, which calls into question a change of perspective that occurred in medieval historiographical thought.
